STEM Emphasis
At Catalyst we place a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Our STEM program is designed to prepare students for the future by engaging them in hands-on, project-based learning that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation.
We provide scholars from Kindergarten through 12th grade with opportunities to explore STEM concepts and develop real-world skills. Whether designing a solution to a problem or conducting scientific investigations, our students are challenged to think creatively, collaborate with their peers, and apply what they learn to real-world scenarios. STEM education at Catalyst is not just about gaining knowledge—it's about becoming the innovators, creators, and leaders of tomorrow.
Extensive Technology Integration
In today’s digital world, technology plays a crucial role in preparing students for success. At Catalyst, we integrate technology across the curriculum to enhance learning and ensure that all students have the digital literacy skills they need.
-
One-to-One Devices: Every scholar at Catalyst has access to their own device, ensuring that they can engage with digital resources, collaborate with peers, and personalize their learning experiences.
-
Smartboards in Every Classroom: Our classrooms are equipped with SMART boards, providing an interactive and engaging way to present lessons, encourage collaboration, and facilitate dynamic learning experiences.
-
Digital Learning Platforms: We incorporate digital learning platforms across all areas of the curriculum, including Amplify for ELA, Eureka for Math, and Savaas for Science. These platforms not only allow for interactive learning but also enable personalized instruction, where students can work at their own pace and receive immediate feedback.
By incorporating these technologies, we ensure that our scholars are learning from traditional methods and developing the skills necessary to navigate and excel in an increasingly digital world.
Differentiated Instruction
Given the impact of past disruptions to education, including remote learning, we recognize that many students face academic gaps. Our goal is to provide equitable, differentiated learning opportunities that meet each scholar’s unique needs. Key strategies include:
-
Incorporating scaffolds to address misconceptions and untaught skills
-
Using FastBridge data to inform instruction and identify gaps
-
Offering targeted small group pull-outs and differentiated lessons
-
Pairing students with peer study buddies for better engagement
-
Encouraging participation in the tutoring program and utilizing extension activities for enrichment
Diverse Learners
We are committed to providing an inclusive environment where all students, including those with special needs, receive the support they need to succeed. We ensure that all IEP and 504 plans are implemented as written and that teachers collaborate regularly with the Specialized Services team. Specific responsibilities include:
-
Implementing the accommodations and modifications listed in IEPs and 504 Plans
-
Attending IEP and 504 meetings as required, with classroom coverage provided
-
Collaborating with the Specialized Services team to develop and monitor individualized plans
-
Utilizing FastBridge data and other resources to tailor instruction for students requiring additional support
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

MTSS is a framework designed to provide early, targeted interventions for students facing academic or behavioral challenges. The system includes three tiers of support, each increasing in intensity based on student needs:
-
Tier I: General classroom instruction with differentiated support (e.g., math and reading centers, small groups)
-
Tier II: Small group interventions 2-3 times a week, with progress monitoring every two weeks
-
Tier III: Intensive, individualized interventions 4 times a week, with weekly progress monitoring
Assessments and Progress Monitoring

To ensure all scholars are making progress, we use a variety of assessments to monitor academic growth:
-
FastBridge Universal Screener: Administered three times per year for reading and math, this screener helps us identify students who may need additional support.
-
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR): An annual state assessment measuring college and career readiness.
-
Ongoing formative assessments: Teachers regularly assess students using tools like IXL, Amplify, and Eureka to ensure they are mastering key concepts.
Classroom Culture and Engagement
At Catalyst we believe that a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom culture is essential to academic success. Our educators are committed to creating learning environments where students feel safe, motivated, and empowered to take ownership of their learning. We focus on building relationships with students, encouraging collaboration, and providing opportunities for students to express their ideas and creativity.

“Catalyst was founded on a simple belief: that positive adult relationships, a disciplined, structured environment, a spirit of reverence and respect for the dignity of each person, and an educational model that focuses on growth - is one solution.”
